CockermouthCockermouth (8 miles)
The attractive market town of Cockermouth (8 miles) lies just outside the Lake District National Park and is famous as the birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth.

As well as a number of shops and restaurants, the town is home to 2 local breweries - Bitter End, a freehouse with its own microbrewery and also the historic Jennings brewery.

At the Sheep and Wool Centre located nearby on the A66 you can see a presentation on the 19 different breeds of Cumbria sheep and watch the skills of the sheep dog and sheep shearer demonstrated in the indoor arena.




BassenthwaiteBassenthwaite (6 miles)
Just 6 miles away is picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake. On the lakeside, visit Mirehouse, a 17th Century House and Gardens with 4 adventure playgrounds. In Spring and Summer catch sight of nesting Ospreys from the viewing point at Dodd Wood. Have a great day out at nearby Trotters World with hundreds of friendly animals including traditional favourites, endangered species, birds of prey and reptiles.








Derwentwater, KeswickKeswick (12 miles)
Keswick on Derwentwater is a popular market town offering a wide range of pubs, cafes restaurants and shops with outdoor wear a speciality. The town has even become known as the "outdoor clothing capital of England". The Visitor also has a choice of 4 museums as well as art and craft galleries and a cinema. From the centre of the town it is just a short walk to the lakeside where boats can be hired.

The all year round Theatre by the Lake on the shores of Derwentwater offers music, films and live theatre to suit all tastes.

The area offers great opportunities for outdoor activities and there are walking routes suitable for all - high summits, forest trails and lakeside paths, including the 4000 year old stone circle at Castlerigg overlooking the town.

During the year, Keswick plays host to a number of festivals - Words by the Water, Beer, Jazz and Film Festivals, a Victorian Fayre and agricultural show.


Solway CoastSolway Coast (10 miles)
Visit the tranquil Solway coast, a tide washed estuary between southwest Scotland and northwest Cumbria, classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Ideal for walkers and bird watchers or for just relaxing on a fine sunny day. Follow the Smugglers Route and learn about the history, heritage, flora fauna and landscape of the Solway coast. Finish off your day with a visit to one of the excellent tea rooms in the area.









Caldbeck Fells Caldbeck and Mungrisedale
Visit the Caldbeck Fells and unspoilt Mungrisedale and Mosedale - perhaps North Lakeland's best kept secret. Escape to hidden valleys and relax at an excellent local pub "The Mill".












Carlisle Carlisle (20 miles)
The Great Border City, with a history which dates back to Roman times. There is much to interest the visitor - a fine shopping precinct, an excellent sports and leisure complex and a magnificent museum. For theatre-goers, the Sands Centre offers an extensive entertainment programme throughout the year, including comedy, music, celebrity acts and travelling national productions. There is also a cinema and numerous restaurants.

Take a day trip to Hadrian's Wall. Built in AD122 the wall stretches from the East to the West coast of Britain and is the most remarkable Roman monument in the country.

Steeped in history, Hadrian's Wall Country offers numerous attractions including castles, gardens, visitors' centres and museums and is also ideal for exploring the beautiful northern countryside.
